Shirley J. (nee Doring) Runions - Shirley J. Runions, former long time Grand Island resident, passed away on August 14, 2015. Born Shirley Jane Doring on August 28, 1928 to Florence E. (nee Burdick) and Alva F. Doring in Niagara Falls, NY. Shirley was raised in the LaSalle section of Niagara Falls where she attended schools and graduated from Lasalle High School in 1946. On the same day of her graduation, she started her job in the Purchasing department at Moore Business Forms on Buffalo Avenue, where she worked until 1952.
In 1948 she met Lawrence "Larry" Runions Jr. at a Moore picnic and they were married in Niagara Falls on October 21, 1950. They moved to Grand Island in 1951, purchasing property on Long Road where they built their first home and raised their three children, Darlene, Gene and Debbie, born while living there. Larry and Shirley built a home next door in 1956 which was the family home until 1985. In 1961 Shirley and Larry went into business with some friends, starting the Relsco Printing Company on Grand Island which was originally located in the right hand side of what is now Kelly's Country Store. A few years later they bought the business themselves and the print shop was relocated to the basement of their home. Shirley worked in the print shop with Larry while raising their children.
Active in her community, Shirley was a Bluebird, Brownie and Cub Scout Leader for her children and a member of the PTA. The family belonged to the Trinity United Methodist Church where Shirley was a Sunday school teacher there for many years. Also active in the Zonta Club for many years, she especially liked helping with the antiques auction. She was the care-giver to Larry when he was diagnosed with cancer before passing away in 1982. After Larry's death, Shirley began working in the real estate office of Doring Real Estate on Grand Island, owned by her brother Floyd Doring. She started as the office manager, but obtained her realtor's license and sold real estate for several years. In 1985, she moved to the Town of Tonawanda, a short distance from her son Gene and his family. Once again Shirley became the full time care-giver for her mother at home until shortly before her mother passed away in 1995. She went back to work, this time as a clerk in the pharmacy of a drug store close to her home. She continued working until she was 76 years old because she loved being around co-workers and customers.
She enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren, babysitting often and enjoyed watching them grow up. She was a devoted grandma, attending all of their games, concerts and special events. Larry and Shirley were some of the original Sabres season ticket holders and she remained an avid fan ever since. Lately, she enjoyed talking hockey with her son and grandsons and received a signed team picture a few years ago from the Sabres' coach as a "devoted fan". If hockey was on TV, there could be no interruptions, unless you wanted to talk hockey. She recently moved to Niagara Falls, living with her daughter, Darlene. She enjoyed reading, word puzzles and most importantly spending time with her family and friends. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Lawrence E. "Larry" Runions Jr. and is survived by her children Darlene R. Sprague of Niagara Falls, Lawrence E. "Gene" (Deborah) Runions III of Grand Island, and Debra S. (Frederick) LosKamp of Bellefonte, PA. Donnette Glaeser Hennigar - Donnette Glaeser Hennigar passed away on April 13, 2015 at her home in Deerfield Beach, FL, surrounded by her loving family. Throughout Donnette's life she did as she pleased; she was a woman of beauty and influence, whose opinion was never asked because it was always given. Her life was full of laughter and celebration, and she would have wanted the memory of her life to be just the same.
Donnette Marie Glaeser, born on March 14, 1924 in Buffalo, NY, was the only daughter of Arthur Glaeser MD and Marie Welshofer RN. Young Donnette attended St. Mary's Seminary, where she graduated Valedictorian in 1941. Donnette was a graduate of Michigan State College (now University). There Donnette was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, and continued to be an active alumna throughout her life. Donnette was eventually crowned Michigan State's "War Bond Queen", a title reserved for the school's most successful World War II fundraiser.
Donnette married William Grant Hennigar on June 1, 1946. In 1956, Bill and Donnette moved their family to a new home on Grand Island, NY, originally designed by her. There she raised eight children. Donnette maintained a lively social calendar, including active membership at the Buffalo Launch Club and numerous charitable activities. She also founded Hennigar Travel Service in 1960, and eventually opened two branch offices in Western New York before opening a fourth in South Florida (with the intention of settling a new life there with her husband and family).
Donnette and Bill opened the travel agency in Deerfield Beach, FL, sold the New York branches, and completed their relocation to a sunnier climate - joining her brother Arthur Glaeser and his family. Donnette's love of travel took her all around the world. With the motto "Ask me, I've been there" she continued to guide future travelers, coordinating cruises for family and friends until just months before her passing. Donnette continued to maintain a very social lifestyle, just like her mother before her, leading her girlfriends to happy hours at the American Legion of Deerfield Beach and lunches at The Cove. Her sense of humor, especially her one-liners, always made her an absolute joy to be around.
Donnette thoroughly enjoyed dancing (beyond her ninetieth birthday), playing tennis, bowling, swimming, and bicycling to the beach - she loved the ocean. Donnette also found time to knit many Irish fisherman sweaters and dozens of mittens for her large family. A devout Catholic, Donnette was also a very active member in her local church - first St. Stephen's Church on Grand Island, then St. Ambrose Church in Deerfield Beach. When she wasn't traveling or with her friends, Donnette loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; they all affectionately referred to her as "Baba". To her family, Baba was more than just a mother or grandmother; she was an inspiration to all. She lived a passionate life, on her terms, and was profoundly loyal to her family.
Donnette's passion for life shines though in her eight children: W. Grant Jr., David Lewis II (Lydia), Scott (Marie), Neal (Renee), Dale (Liz Wilbert), Donnette Rayhill (Michael), Curtis (Marsha Milot), Alex (Virginia), sister-in-law Patricia, sixteen remaining grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren - whose lives have all been touched by the great "Matriarch". We were lucky to have known her, and we were lucky to have loved her. Donnette was predeceased by her husband, William Hennigar; her brother, Arthur Glaeser; and her grandson, Travis Hennigar. A memorial Mass to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 9:30 AM in St. Ambrose Church, Deerfield Beach, FL. She will be buried alongside her beloved husband at the South Florida VA National Cemetery in Lake Worth, FL. Donations to Hospice by the Sea may be made in her honor at the following website: https://www.hpbcf.org/hbts_foundation.

Rolph A. Person - Dec. 24, 1929 - Jan. 10, 2015
Rolph A. Person, an engineer who earned his doctorate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 22, specialized in pollution control at Union Carbide and was known for his generosity and enthusiasm, died in Grand Island earlier this month. He was 85. "He always took things to the extreme," said Russell Person, his son. "He studied as much as he could about a subject." The son of Swedish immigrants and a civil engineer father, he grew up in San Francisco. He didn't talk much about his academic accomplishments. Instead his son remembered his keen support of his own hobby. When he was a teen, his dad took him to national competitions for stunt BMX, or "bicycle motocross" races, in Florida, Illinois and elsewhere on the East Coast. He remembers his father yelling, "Go Russ, go!" from the sidelines.
During his career as a chemical engineer at Union Carbide, later Elkem Metals, his world travels included China, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Japan, Brazil and South Africa. After he retired at 65, he followed his interest in taxes and earned enrolled agent status, the Internal Revenue Service's highest credential. He went on to do tax returns for friends and family for free, not as a business. "He did it, kind of as a hobby," said Person. "He was always very generous. He would give his time and his energy to anything." When he served on a jury evaluating a car accident, he brought in model cars to persuade the rest of the jurors to support the insurance company in spite of their misgivings. "He knew that the accident, as portrayed, was impossible," Person said.
Father and son went together to weekly showings of classic movies at the University at Buffalo seminars. He liked to cook, closely following the "Joy of Cooking" directions for his specialty, eggplant Parmesan. Until about a month ago, they swam twice a week at the pool at Byblos Niagara, the former Holiday Inn. He is survived by his son, Russell; daughters, Janet Paterno and Valerie Schmedlen; and four grandchildren. His wife, Nancy, of 50 years, died in 2009. His son Glenn died about 20 years ago. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kaiser Funeral Home, 1950 Whitehaven, Grand Island.
