Strengths: Largest veterans organization in the world
Ideas: The many veterans living on Grand Island are a great untapped source of community involvement. They should be encouraged to help the various programs in the town.

American Legion - Welcome Addition - November 2011

   The Grand Island welcome signs located at the Grand Island Blvd. entrance from the south bridge, and at the Long Road exit at the north end, were renovated a few years ago by the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and the GI Economic Development Advisory Board. Recently, the American Legion #1346 added their emblem to the signs that recognizes many of the service clubs of Grand Island. The American Legion supports not only veterans but our community in many ways. This year, two scholarships were presented to high school seniors. Thanks go to Henry Ensminger, who got the ball rolling on this project.

American Legion Donates Flagpole - August 2011

   The Grand Island Post 1346, American Legion, and a few helpers, gathered together Tuesday, August 23, 2011 to raise a 30-foot flagpole at Miracle Field, in Veterans Park. The flagpole is a gift from the Legionnaires to the children who will utilize Miracle Field in future years. We thank the efforts of the many organizers and volunteers including the Buffalo Sabres Alumni, Lions Club, Town of Grand Island who are working to make this much needed facility a reality. Our children are our future and we should give them the tools to make it productive and bright. The Legion stands by to help in anyway they are needed.





American Legion Presents Scholarship - August 2011

   The Grand Island Post 1346, American Legion, recently awarded a scholarship to Grand Island High School graduate Alexander Prine. Alexander intends to continue his studies at Houghton College. We wish him well in his studies and know that he will have a great future. We urge the graduating students of GIHS to participate in our scholarship program in the coming years.





American Legion Presents Scholarship - July 2011

   The American Legion Grand Island Post #1346 presented a Scholarship to Miss Ambria Dawn Tim, at its monthly meeting on July 27, 2011. Ambria thanked the Legionnaires and stated that the award will help her to continue her goals. Ambria will enter Buffalo State College this fall and intends to join the US Air Force after completing college. Ambria is working for a degree in criminal justice and hopes one day to become an FBI agent. The members of the Post are happy to help the Grand Island High School students toward their goals and are hoping to see more applicants for scholarships in the coming years.

American Legion Mother's Day Plant Sale - April 2011

   The Grand Island Post #1346 American Legion will hold its Annual Mothers Day Plant Sale on Friday, May 6th and Saturday, May 7th, 2011. "We thank the Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper Post 9249, Veterans of Foreign Wars, for the use of their grounds to conduct this event," a spoksman said this week. Plants are locally grown and many varieties will be available. Sale hours are from 9 a.m. until sold out or 6 p.m. In past years the sale has sold out earlier, so all are urged to get your pick early.
   The officers and members of the Grand Island American Legion thank you for your support. The funds derived from this event are used to help our Veterans in need, the Veterans Hospital (VAMC), high school Scholarships, community projects (Neighbors Foundation, Little League, Miracle League, and others.) The Post Color Guard participates in Memorial Day, Independence Day Parade, 9-11, Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day Services.
    As usual the Post is recruiting eligible Veterans to join the ranks. "We welcome new members and are always looking to enroll the younger Veterans to be the Future of the Post." All Veterans should belong to a Veterans organization, Check Us Out ,You will be glad you did. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m., in the meeting rooms of the Loyal Order of the Moose, 2524 Grand Island Blvd.
