Mission: Service to veterans. Information for various benefits due veterans of all services, national and community affairs
Help: Help in recruiting recently discharged veterans and those veterans who do not belong to at least one veterans organization
Strengths: Largest veterans organization in the world.
Ideas: The many veterans living on Grand Island are a great untapped source of community involvement. They are encouraged to help the various programs in the town.

The GI American Legion held its annual Poppy Sale the weekend of October 10 & 11.
Grand Island Hometown Hero's Military Banner Program - October 2025
The program is designed to help families and the community never forget the brave men and women who have served and those serving our nation today. FORM.The phone number on the application is to the VFW post. Whoever answers the phone at the post will take the information and forward it on. One of the Legion committee will contact the individual and answer any questions. When the completed application is returned with the payment, it will be reviewed and the applicant will be notified.. Upon approval the name will be put on the "Banner" list. At this time, there are 18 poles on Whitehaven for the Hometown Heros Banners. New Banners will be made in order that they were received and approved. Banner installation and removal (by the GI Parks Department) will be from Memorial Day through Veterans Day. Dates will vary dependent on weather conditions.
