Successful "Make a Graham Cracker House" - December 2013

   
   On Saturday, December 14th over 100 children and parents enjoyed making Graham Cracker Houses with Explore and More, A Children's Museum. This event has been held annually at the Grand Island Memorial Library beginning in December 2004.




Library Closed December 24 & 25 - December 2013

   The Grand Island Memorial Library announces special holiday hours. The library will be closed on Tuesday, December 24 and Wednesday, December 25 in observance of the Christmas holiday. The library will be open Tuesday, December 31 from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm and closed on Wednesday, January 1 in observance of New Year’s Day.
The library will be open during the holidays as follows:

    The Grand Island Memorial Library Adult Book Club will meet on Monday, December 16 from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm in the library’s meeting room. Successful Book Sale - November 2013


   The Friends of the Library Book Sale took place on November 15th and 16th. The book sale was very successful due to the hard work of the Friends group and community participation.

"Make a Graham Cracker House" - November 2013

    A "Make a Graham Cracker House" will be held at the Grand Island Memorial Library on Saturday, December 14th at 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. All ages are welcome; however, we ask that parents accompany children ages 6 and younger to the program. This program is funded with proceeds from the 2011 and 2012 Rare Affair Library System Gala Fundraisers.

   The Grand Island Memorial Library will be closed on Monday, November 11th, in observance of Veteran's Day. The library will be open its regular hours as follows:

Election Day Hours - October 2013

   The Grand Island Memorial Library will be open Tuesday, November 5th, Election Day for its regular hours. The library will open at 10:00 am and close at 9:00 pm. There will be no Pre-school Story Hour that day. The library is closed on Sunday.




Family Story Time - October 2013

   The Grand Island Memorial Library will hold a family story time, celebrating Clifford, the Big Red Dog on Thursday, November 7th at 6:30 pm. This program is for children ages 3 to 8; we ask that children ages 5 and under be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required. Senator Grisanti Provides Bullet Grant - August 2013

   New York State Senator Mark Grisanti brought good news to local libraries in July when he announced $128,000 in grants through the "Bullet Aid" targeted education fund for libraries. He stopped by the Grand Island Memorial Library on Monday, September 23rd for a tour. Islander Sheryl Knab, the Executive Director of WNY Library Resources Council (WNYLRC) was on hand to show Senator Grisanti and Councilman Dick Crawford progress on a regional digitization program that digitized the Dispatch weekly newspaper for the years from 1989 - 2008. WNYLRC is a member-driven organization that helps libraries build connections with each other, library users, and the larger community. Karlen Chase works with the digitization program and gave a tutorial on how the program works.

   The Grand Island Memorial Library is sponsoring a book club for teens. The organizational meeting will be held on Saturday, October 5th at 1:00 p.m. at the library. Refreshments will be served.    The Grand Island Memorial Library is sponsoring a book club for adults. Books will be selected by members, keeping in mind their appeal to a diverse group of readers. Selections will be readily available in the library system. Volunteers will lead the discussions, which will last approximately an hour, from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. After the discussion refreshments will be served.    There will be a Fall Session of the Toddler Time Lapsit at the Grand Island Memorial Library featuring stories, songs and fingerplays for children 18 months to 3 years old. The program will be held on Wednesday mornings, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. beginning on October 2nd. Registration is required.    There will be a Fall Session of the Preschool Story Hour at the Grand Island Memorial Library featuring stories, songs and crafts for children 3 to 5 years old. The program will be held on Monday mornings, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. beginning on September 23rd and on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. beginning on September 24th. Summer Reading Celebration

    The Grand Island Memorial Library presented the Niagara University Repertory Theatre on Tuesday, August 13th for the children in the "Rookie Reader" program. On August 15th the "Summer Reading Celebration" was held and over 40 children enjoyed face painting, ice cream, crafts and a performance by Charlie and Checkers.




Niagara University Repertory Theatre Visit - August 2013

    The Grand Island Memorial Library is proud to present the Niagara University Repertory Theatre on Tuesday, August 13th at 2:00 p.m. This program is for children entering Kindergarten – Grade 6 and no registration is required. For more information, visit the library or call 773-7124.

   The Grand Island Memorial Library Summer Program has been very well attended. On Thursday, July 18th a magic show was presented by Paul Antonio and had over 130 children and adults in attendance. On July 24, 2013 a puppet show was presented by the Omni Puppet Theater, with 90 children and adults in attendance. As part of this event, the library held a Hug Your Library Program which was attended by Grand Island Supervisor Mary Cooke and County Legislator Kevin Hardwick. The event promoted library services. Funding for both programs was provided by the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library's 175th Gala Anniversary celebration.

   The Grand Island Memorial Library announces its summer hours:
OPEN Monday and Tuesday 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Wednesday and Friday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Thursday 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The library is CLOSED ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.
Summer hours begin the week of June 17 and continue through the Labor Day Holiday.




Battle of the Books Coming Soon - May 2013

   The Battle of the Books informational meeting for the 2013 team will take place on Monday, June 24 from 1:00 – 1:30 p.m. Teens entering grades 6, 7, 8 & 9 in the Fall of 2013 are invited to come to the library to sign up to participate in the Battle and to receive their books.     The Grand Island Memorial Library will present a series of Adult Computer Classes starting June 21st. They include Computer Basics, Internet Basics, Organizing Computer Files, ebooks & ereaders, ipad basics and Free Stuff Online. Check out the flyer for registration information and dates.

Gravitational Bull Entertains 100+ - April 2013


   The father-and-son team of professional jugglers, "Gravitational Bull" entertained over 100 children and parents on Wednesday, April 3rd at the GI Memorial Library. Dave and Kyle Fultz are WNY residents and have been performing in the Western and Central New York areas for the past several years. In addition to juggling, "Gravitational Bull" performances usually contain magic, comedy, balloon twisting, story telling, ball & plate spinning and balancing.

    The Grand Island Memorial Library celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday on Saturday, March 2nd at 2:00 p.m. Many children enjoyed Assemblyman John Ceretto reading Dr. Seuss books.
