   Local author Lissa Marie Redmond will lead a discussion of her newest book The Murder Book: A Cold Case Investigation. Copies of the book will be available. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library.

Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library - April 2019

   Thursday, May 9, 6:00 PM - 6:30 PM
    Annual meeting of the Friends membership. Stay afterwards for local author Lissa Marie Redmond as she leads a discussion of her second book The Murder Book.
    Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library will hold their Annual Meeting including elections on Thursday, May 9th at 6 pm at the Library. The following slate of officers and board members is proposed: President - Mary Cooke, Recording Secretary – Trisha Birtz, Board Members – Marie Volpe, Russ Person, (open). A proposal to amend the By-Laws to indicate that 3 unexcused absences from board meetings will be considered resignation will be voted on. A proposal to increase the annual dues from $3 per year to $5 per year will be considered. The short business meeting will be followed by a presentation at 6:30 by local author, Lissa Marie, Redmon, author of The Murder Book. Refreshments will be provided and all are invited to attend.

   Saturday, May 4, 12:00 PM - 2:30 PM -Skill level: Advanced
   This workshop is designed as a practical, hands-on introduction to downloading eBooks from the library's website for use on personal electronic devices. The focus will be on the Book, Kindle, iPad, & Android devices. There will be a demonstration of the steps required to download and activate necessary software, along with tips to effectively search and browse our OverDrive catalog.
   Requirements: BECPL library card, mouse and internet skills, eDevice and any usernames or passwords associated with it. Device must be charged and registered. Registration is required for this program. Free and open to library patrons age 17 & above.

Introduction to Balloon Sculpture with Gravitational Bull - April 2019

   Thursday, April 25, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
   Ages 8 and up, though younger are welcome with an adult. This is a fun and imaginative introduction to the art of balloon structure. Inflating, tying, managing the air within the balloon, lock twists, fold twists, and other techniques are all demonstrated. Participants will make balloon sculptures all on their own and are encouraged to merge their newly acquired skill with their own limitless imagination to come up with their works of art. Mobile Dome Planetarium - April 2019

   Saturday, April 6, 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM. 2 one-hour sessions to choose from: 12:00 PM or 1:00 PM.
    Best of the Hubble Telescope. This program is designed for ages 8 and up. Family-friendly, adults are encouraged to attend.
    Take a fantastic tour of your universe as seen through the eyes of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). With some of the finest pictures ever released from this orbiting observatory, see new planet pictures, awesome new stars still shrouded in gas, and even dying stars. Peer at galaxies in deep space, and see these star cities colliding into each other. All seen through the eyes of the Hubble Space Telescope. Seasonal constellations are shown during the second part of the planetarium visit.

Rock Cactus Painting - April 2019

   Local master crafter, Kathleen Rumfola, will host this workshop focused on rock painting, specifically to look like cacti. The second part of the workshop will focus on arranging the completed "cacti" into a decorative potted "plant." Each participant will be able to assemble and take home their very own creation. Case Studies from the Asylum - March 2019

    Presenter: Roseanne Higgins, author, adjunct professor of Anthropology, SUNY Buffalo
    Actual records from the Erie County Poorhouse and hospital ledgers for patients with an insanity diagnosis, the history of the asylum, and how it evolved, as New York State laws changed, will be discussed. Roseanna is also the author of the 'Orphans and Inmates' historical fiction series of books set in Buffalo during the 19th century. The discussion is based on the research done for this book series. Donated Book Sale - March 2019

    The Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library will be sponsoring a used book sale at the Library on March 8th and 9th . The sale will be from 5 pm to 7 pm on Friday, for Friends members. Annual memberships available at the door for $3. Join us on members’ night for the best choice in current fiction, non-fiction and children’s books galore! The hours for the bag sale on Saturday will be from 10 am to 3 pm. The sale will include a special deal: “Fill a bag” for $5 from 10 am to 1 pm and the clearance sale from 1 to 3 pm ($3 per bag). Bags will be provided, or bring your own. Proceeds from the Friends membership dues and the sale of donated books is used to sponsor programs and purchase materials for the Grand Island Memorial library. Support your library! JumpBunch Fun and Fitness Class - February 2019

   Friday, February 22nd, 1:00 PM - 1:45 PM, Ages 6-12.
   Keep fit this February break with this fun fitness-themed class. Team up and play some indoor sports and games with your peers. All equipment provided. Wear comfortable clothes and sneakers! February Break Yoga Class - February 2019

    Send your child on a peaceful journey in this fun-filled class taught by Donna Baia from Kidding Around Yoga! (Hula) Hoop Making Party - February 2019

    Wednesday, February 20th, 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM,
    This program will begin by explaining the secret to finding the perfect size for a beginner hoop. Next, Benjamin will demonstrate how to build and connect hoops, followed by members choosing their colors, tapes, and materials to decorate their hoop. All supplies provided.
    Benjamin will break down the fundamentals of waist hooping and a couple of off-body techniques for program participants. Kids' Snowshoe Hike with Reinstein Woods - February 2018

    Tuesday, February 19th, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM, Ages 6-12.
    Come explore the natural beauty around the Grand Island Memorial Library with staff from Reinstein Woods. Find animal tracks in the snow and make some tracks of your own as we learn how fun snowshoeing can be! Snowshoes will be provided. Please dress for the weather!    An Introduction to tracing your family's roots with Ancestry Library Edition (ALE), a database available at any Buffalo & Erie County Public Library location. Similar to the popular Ancestry.com website, this database contains collections of vital and original records, including those relating to birth, marriage, death, military service, and immigration.
