Holiday Light Display Contest -October 2015


    The Grand Island Recreation Department and the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce are having a "Holiday Light Display Contest". All Island residents and businesses are invited to compete in two categories, the "Classic" and the "Contemporary". Entry forms must be sent to the Recreation Department before December 9th to qualify. Judging will take place December 11 & 12th from 8:00 -11:00 p.m. See flyer for complete details and for registration form.




Halloween Activities at Nike Base - October 2015

         
    The Grand Island High School Art Club and GI Recreation Department are teaming up once again to provide Halloween activities to Island residents. The "Isle of Spooky Fun" is geared toward young children and will take place on Saturday, October 24th from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the Nike Base Community Building, 3278 Whitehaven Rd., the cost is $5 per child. There will be games, scarecrow contest, prizes and more. The "Isle of Horror" is for teens and adults at the community center on Saturday, October 24th & Sunday, October 25th from 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. The cost is $5 per person. All proceeds go to the GIHS Art Club.




GI Recreation Department Saturday Activities - September 2015

New start date, Saturday, November 14th.    The Grand Island Recreation Department has announced they will be hosting Saturday activities for youths ages 4-15 starting November 14th. There will be indoor and outdoor games, arts & crafts, painting, movies and more. Registration is required and the arts and crafts program has a fee of $20 for five sessions. Flag Football Skills and Games - August 2015

    The Grand Island Recreation Department will present "Flag Football Skills and Games" on Tuesday evenings in September at the Nike Base, under the lights. Starting September 8 through the 29th, boys and girls 7-15 are invited to play from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Learn flag football skills and rules of the game. Pre-registration is required by Friday, September 3rd and there are 40 openings. This is a free program, see flyer for details.




Tuesday Men's Softball Champions - August 2015


    The Tuesday Men's Softball league champs and playoff champs were the Say Cheese Villians. Their league record was 10-0 and their final record was 12-0. They won the championship game by a score of 22-9 over Island Lanes 1. Team members are: Eric Breier, Nick Colao, JJ Kreiger, Todd Lee, Marvin Pawlowski III, Marvin Pawlowski, Jr., JJ Tutweiler, Shawn Vanderbrook, Justin Vanderbrook, Shaun Winter, Doug Barney, Bill Clume, Joe Ferrara and Barry Pawlowski.




Youth Fishing Club - July 2015

   The Grand Island Recreation Department is hosting a Fishing Club for children ages 7-15. Discover Grand Island by fishing at different locations including Beaver Island Lagoon, Fisherman's Landing and Big Six Marina. NYS fishing licenses are not required if you are 15 years-old or younger. It will take place on Monday and Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. for four weeks, July 20 - August 12. Fishing Contest at Fisherman's Landing - June 2015

   The GI Parks & Recreation Department is sponsoring a Fishing Contest at Fisherman's Landing on Saturday, June 27th from 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. No license is required as it is NYS Free Fishing Weekend. The contest is open to youth 9-15, adults 16 & up, seniors 65 & up and special needs residents. See flyer for more details.

   The Town of Grand Island Memorial Day serice will take place on Monday, May 25th at Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Park, Baseline & Grand Island Blvd. at 10:00 a.m. See Program. In case of rain, the service will be re-located to the VFW Pavilion.

GI Recreation Easter Egg Hunt at Town Commons - April 2015

   



    A successful Easter Egg Hunt at Town Commons on April 3rd had over 250 participants and 2000 eggs collected. There was the egg hunt, coloring, visit with the Easter Bunny, and Guess How Many Eggs contest. There were also golden eggs hidden with special prizes for them.

GI Recreation Department Easter Egg Hunt - March 2015

   The Grand Island Recreation Department Easter Egg Hunt and visit with the Easter Bunny is on Friday, April 3rd from 10:00 a.m. - noon at the Town Commons. The Easter Egg Hunt begins at 10:15 a.m. with two groups; toddler - 4 years old and 5 - 10 years old. There will also be pictures with the Island Bunny, guess how many eggs contest and Easter coloring. See Easter Egg Hunt for details.

    The Recreation Department sponsored three days of fun over the February Break for 15 participants. The morning program was "Build and Race Magnetic Levitation Cars". The kids learned about magnetic poles, electrical connections and center of gravity, and put their knowledge to use to build and modify each car. The afternoon program of "Movie and Games" featured movies, air hockey, knock hockey, arcade basketball and enjoying the snowy weather outside, building snow forts and a snow slide.
Race Champions were; Levitator Car Modified - Jackson Scalise, Warp Drive - Brianna Beyer and Levitator Car Stock and Warp Drive Levitator Car - Eric Scalise.




GI Recreation Department February Break Activities - January 2015

    The GI Recreation Department February Break activities are for children in 4th - 8th grade. The morning program is a "Build and Race Magnetic Levitation Cars" and is Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday, February 16-17-18, from 9:00 a.m. - noon. Two cars will be made this year at a cost of $20 per child, all materials included. The afternoon program is "Movie and Games" and is Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday, February 16-17-18, from noon-3:00 p.m. Watch a movie and play air hockey, knock hockey, arcade basketball and more. The cost is $7 per child and snacks and beverages will be provided during the movie. There is space for 30 children in each program, pre-registration is required and the deadline is Thursday, February 12th. See flyer for details.
