Mary Dunbar-Daluisio Memorial at Veterans Park - October 2018

Click photo for larger view.

The Mary Dunbar-Daluisio Memorial at Veterans Park started as an idea of putting a bench in the park in Mary’s memory, and a donation jar was put out at the 2018 Relay For Life in June. With all the support it received, it soon became a tree and a bench. Then it was posted on Facebook and Isledegrande, to make sure everybody that wanted to be a part of it got to be a part. Those donations quickly turned a bench and a tree, into two benches and a tree, and the garden idea was born. There is not enough money yet to put in the stone walkway and all the extra plants, but everyone knows it will all come together. It will be located close to the parking lots, in front of the snack stand, at Veterans Park. The benches have been ordered, the tree will be going in this fall, and hopefully the benches will be installed at that time too. Dedication is planned for Relay For Life on June 7, 2019.
If you'd like to contribute to the memorial, cash & check donations can be dropped off at deSignet (1869 Whitehaven Road) or mailed to Mary's Memorial c/o 42 Flanigen Lane, Grand Island, 14072. Checks should be made payable to Lynn Dingey.

Mary Dunbar-Daluisio Memorial at Veterans Park - July 2018

Relay For Life of Grand Island is dedicated to continuing to share Mary Dunbar-Daluisio's HOPE with all cancer Survivors and Caregivers. Many of you have showed Relay your support in many ways to honor Mary this past year, by doing so you've helped share HOPE and we can't thank you enough. Mary not only gave us HOPE but she taught us how to give others HOPE.
Mary has touched so many lives in so many ways always with a positive attitude and a smile. She definitely had a way about her. To honor her memory, we'd like to place a memorial bench and tree in Veterans Park.

The Purple Ribbon Warrior 5k was held in Mary Dunbar-Daluisio's memory on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at Say Cheese Pizza. Over 250 runners registered for this first time race, and over $5000 was raised through entrance fees, a basket raffle and outright donations. It was a beautiful day and Mary would have loved it!
The Dan McBride Memorial Cup will be held at Harborcenter, 100 Washington Street, Buffalo, on Sunday, May 6th from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. This event was started back in 2013 to honor Dan's battle with cancer. Each year the event brings the family and friends of Dan McBride, American Coradius International and the Grand Island Relay For Life together to raise funds in Dan's memory. Former Sabres player Andrew Peters is joining in on the fun on May 6th. Over $3500 has been raised so far.

Paint the Town Purple - April 2018

The 2018 Relay For Life Student Ambassadors are Alex Melisz and Sara Gorton. They will join committe members on Saturday, April 28th to "Paint the Town Purple", in anticipation of the national "Paint the Town Purple" day held May 1st. The Town Commons, Town Hall and Fire Company property all get dressed up with purple bows.
Bows will be available to be purchased on April 28th at the Northwest branch on Grand Island Boulevard from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m as well as at deSignet Jewelers at 1869 Whitehaven Road. Large bows are $5.00 and will be available while supplies last. Smaller bows will also be available for a $1.00 donation.
Be creative and spread the word. When someone asks you why you dressed up your front door purple, be sure to tell them May 1st is May Day for Relay. Committee members are encouraging all Grand Islanders to follow their lead as well as inspiring others to follow. It's easy and fun. Just hang up some purple decorations, wear your favorite purple tie or plant purple flowers in your front yard. Whatever you choose to do, show your purple spirit and make that spirit contagious. Whether you choose to decorate alone or with a group of friends, feel good knowing that you are showing your support for those who have fought or continue their battle with cancer. For more information, please call Becky Sommer-Stufkosky at 774-8978.

Community Thank You - April 2018

Thank you, Grand Island, for supporting our Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser for Relay for Life on April 16th at The Riverstone Grill. For most of us at Sidway, this was our first foray into serving at a restaurant. We enjoyed the opportunity to serve and are greatly appreciative of those who weathered the storm to join us. Your generosity helped to make the evening a wonderful event. Thank you again!

Purple Ribbon Warrior 5k Race/Walk - March 2018

Mary Dunbar-Daluisio passed away in 2017 after an 11 year battle with cancer. During those years she was co-chair for Relay for Life Grand Island from 2004-2011, and personnally raised thousands of dollars in her efforts. After being diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer, Mary devoted herself to supporting research efforts and sharing her story. A courageous fighter, Mary gave others strength and hope in their battles. One of her favorite causes was the annual lawnmower race, which blossomed into a day-long celebration and competition, with the proceeds going to Relay for Life.
