Ideas: The many veterans living on Grand Island are a great untapped source of community involvement. They should be encouraged to help the various programs in the town.

To All Veterans and Members - Nov. 2012

The Grand Island Post #1346, American Legion will hold its regular monthly meeting on November 28, 2012, at 7 p.m., in the meeting room of the Loyal Order of The Moose Lodge #180. Members are requested to come a bit early. Guest Speaker, Mr. Brian B. Stiller, Director of Western New York Health Care (Veterans Hospital), will give the latest information about Veterans Care and eligibility for care at the VA Medical Centers. All Veterans are invited to attend this informational meeting. Questions on your health care will be answered by Mr. Stiller Recently discharged veterans should attend and get the latest information. See you there. All Members are urged to attend. Yourour input is important.

   Members of the Grand Island American Legion Post #1346 visited the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Buffalo on October 12, 2012. The group donated $500 from their recent Poppy Sale to buy patients items that are on their needy wish list.




American Legion Meeting - Oct. 2012

The Grand Island Post #1346, American Legion will hold its regular monthly meeting 7 p.m. on October 31, 2012 in the meeting room of the Loyal Order of The Moose Lodge # 180. Members are requested to come a bit early. Guest Speaker, Eric Anderson, Governor of the Moose, will address the members as to cooperation between the organizations during the coming years. “Christmas Get Together” will be discussed. All Members are URGED to attend. Your input is important.

   The American Legion was recognized with a proclamation by the town board and read by Supervisor Mary Cooke during the Tuesday, September 4, 2012 town board meeting. The proclamation in part, follows:
The Grand Island American Legion Post #1346 observes September 11th as Patriot Day - Remember 9-11-2001. The Town Board and Town of Grand Island at the 16th regular meeting of 2012, does hereby proclaim American Legion Patriot Poppy Day on Grand Island on September 7-8, 2012 and urges our citizens to recognize the merits of this cause by contributing generously to this drive, and to wear a Patriot Poppy as evidence of their support.




American Legion Poppy Sale – Sept. 2012

   In commemoration of the attacks on 9-11-2001, the Grand Island American Legion Post #1346 will hold its Annual Poppy Drive on September 7-8th, 2012. Funds from this Drive will be used for various Veterans' projects at the VA Hospital.




American Legion Picnic – August 2012

   The American Legion Grand Island Post #1346, reminds members of the annual family picnic to be held Sunday, August 19th, 2012 at 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the picnic grounds of the Loyal Order of the Moose, 2625 Grand Island Blvd. Those who intend to attend the picnic are asked to call Commander Fred Wornick at 773-9394, or Adjutant George Deglopper at 773-5333, before August 12, 2012. A head count is needed for ordering food. Members and family members, come and enjoy a pleasant afternoon with your fellow American Legionnaires.

American Legion Presents Scholarships – July 2012

   Grand Island High School seniors Phyllip Stallard and Alexandra Corrao were the happy recipients of scholarships from the American Legion Post #1346 on Wednesday, June 27, 2012. Phyllip will be attending NCCC and Alexandra is headed to SUNY Oswego.

   Grand Island American Legion Post #1346 donated three flags and poles to Boy Scout Troop 520 and Pack 520 at the Asbury Shalom Zone Church on Wednesday, June 27, 2012. The church is located on the west side of Buffalo. Rev. Paul Robinson from Trinity U.M.C. recently approached the American Legion asking for help for the scouts.

American Legion Plant Sale – May 2012

   The American Legion Post held a very successful plant sale on Friday and Saturday, May 11th and 12th. Thanks to the community for their support, the American Legion is able to provide scholarships to Grand Island High School students and funds to the Neighbors Foundation, DAV Transportation Network at Veteran's Hospital, Veteran's Hospital and other worthy causes.



American Legion Mothers Day Plant Sale – May 2012

   Members of the Grand Island American Legion Post 1346 will hold their annual Mother's Day Plant Sale on May 11-12, 2012 at the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Post VFW 9249, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. The Hanging Basket Plants are the finest available in the area. The Veteran Members conduct this fund raiser to assist local Veterans, Veterans Hospital, Scholarships for High School Seniors, and various local Community Projects. Please SUPPORT your local Veterans and Servicemen and Women. Make Mother happy with a beautiful hanging basket flower. Support your local veterans. A big thank you from the officers and members of the Grand Island Post #1346 American Legion.

American Legionnaire of the Year – March 2012

   The Grand Island American Legion Post #1346 Board of Directors decided to acknowledge each year a Legionnaire of the Year. The qualifications include: member in good standing, shown outstanding service within the Post, shown community involvement and exemplified our motto for "God and Country". It was an overwhelming decision that Past Commander Al Prame be chosen for the year 2011 as his hard work and service really stood out. The award took place at the general meeting, February 29, 2012.
