   The Grand Island Memorial Library announces new library hours beginning January 3, 2011:

   The Grand Island Memorial Library will be closed on Friday, December 24 and Saturday, December 25 in observance of the Christmas holiday.

Friends of Library Discard Book Sale - Nov. 2010


   Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library present a discard book sale at the library on Friday, November 19 from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and on Saturday, November 20 from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. Fill a bag for $2.00 from 1 – 3 pm. Proceeds to benefit the Grand Island Memorial Library.


Library Graham Cracker House Project - Nov. 2010


A Make your own Graham Cracker House event will be presented by Explore & More at the Grand Island Memorial Library on Saturday, December 4, 2010. There will be two sessions: 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Registration is limited and begins on Wednesday, November 10. When registering please specify which time you prefer. All ages are welcome, however, we ask that parents accompany children ages 6 and younger to the program. To register, or for more information, call 773-7124 or visit the library.    Miss Mary, of the Buffalo Museum of Science presented Spooktacular Science to 40 children at the Grand Island Memorial Library on Tuesday, October 26 as part of the Big Read program. The group is shown conducting electricity by holding hands and using their secret powers.
   As part of The Big Read, on October 19 Anne Marie Jason presented a spooky family storytime for over 30 children and their families at the Grand Island Memorial Library.


Author Visit - Book Sale - Nov. 2010


On Tuesday, November 9, at 7:15 p.m. in the community room of the Grand Island Library, 1715 Bedell Road on Grand Island, well known author Cathy Guildiner, will be speaking about her new sequel, After the Falls. Miss Guidiner is the author of Too Close To The Falls, the memoir she wrote about her childhood in the Niagara Falls area. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Grand Island Library. We hope that readers will come to hear this well known author and enjoy an entertaining evening.
    On Friday November 19 and Saturday November 20, the library will hold a discard sale of the many books the library has removed from their shelves to make room for newer books. Many excellent books will be available such as previous best sellers and topics that are no longer in high demand. We hope readers will come to the sale and purchase some good reading for the upcoming long winter evenings.
    The hours for the sale will be 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If any further information is needed, or if you'd like to help with the sale, please call the library at 773-7124.

Flu & Pneumonia Vaccination - Oct. 2010


The VNA will offer Flu & Pneumonia Vaccinations at the Grand Island Memorial Library on Saturday, November 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Bring your insurance card.

Library Has Boat Building Program - July 2010

    On Thursday, July 29, Kate Mini from Buffalo Urban Outdoor Education presented a program on boat building and animals found in Lake Erie. The highlight of the program was when the students constructed boats from tin foil, duct tape and craft sticks and a will it float contest was held.

   Over 150 children and adults enjoyed the ventriloquist, Doug Weaver and his pals, on Tuesday, July 20 when they presented their show at the Grand Island Memorial Library.

    The Touch Tank from the Niagara Falls Aquarium made a visit to the Grand Island Memorial Library on Thursday, July 22. Over 40 children enjoyed seeing and touching the sea creatures up close and making a craft.

   Over 60 children and adults enjoyed a performance by The Kids on the Block, an educational puppet troupe that travels throughout Western New York promoting disability awareness and the acceptance of differences. The troupe, that performed on Thursday, July 15, is sponsored locally by the Museum of disAbility History.

   Over 150 children and adults attended a musical performance by Glenn Colton at the Grand Island Memorial Library on Tuesday, July 13. Funding for the program was provided by the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library.


Library Summer Hours - June 2010


The Grand Island Memorial Library announces its summer hours:
OPEN Monday and Tuesday 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Wednesday and Friday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Thursday 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The library is CLOSED ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.
Summer hours begin the week of June 14 and continue through the Labor Day Holiday.

On-going programs:
    Preschool Story Hour, Monday or Tuesday mornings, beginning July 6, 10:30 – 11:30 am, for ages 3 – 5 years old, registration is necessary.
   Toddler Lapsit, Wednesdays, beginning July 7, 10:30 – 11:00 am, for ages 18 months – 3 years old, with an adult caregiver, registration is necessary.
   Bookworm Read-To-Me Club and Book Marks Club, independent reading clubs, visit the library to register and receive your reading log.
   Rookie Readers, Tuesdays, beginning July 6, 2:00 – 3:15 pm, for children entering grades 1 & 2, registration is necessary.
   Page Turners, Thursdays, beginning July 8, 2:00 – 3:15 pm, for children entering grades 3 – 6, registration is necessary.
   Battle of the Books, for students entering grades 6 – 9, registration is necessary.
   Tuesday Teens, meets July 13, July 27 and August 10 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm, for students entering grades 6 – 12, registration is necessary.

Library News - Children's Book Week - May 2010

    A Children's Book Week program was held on May 11 when Deborah Morris brought her therapy dog Sarah to the Grand Island Memorial Library. The young readers enjoyed reading books aloud to her in the children's area.


Friends of Grand Island Memorial Library Annual Meeting - May 2010


   Members of the Friends of Grand Island Memorial Library will hold their annual meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 20, 2010 in the Library Meeting Room, 1715 Bedell Road. Guest speaker is Deborah Williams, author of "The Erie Canal: Great Destinations: A Complete Guide." This is the first comprehensive travel guide to New York's canals and communities from Buffalo to Albany and along the Cayuga-Seneca, Oswego and Champlain Canals.

    Guest speaker will follow a short business meeting, and refreshments will be served. Come and bring a friend!


Battle Of Books At Library - May 2010

The Battle of the Books informational meeting for the 2010 team will take place on Saturday, June 12 at 1:00 p.m. Teens entering grades 6, 7, 8 & 9 in the Fall of 2010 are invited to come to the library to sign up to participate in the Battle and to receive their books. Library News - Adult Computer Course - May 2010

The Grand Island Memorial Library will hold an adult computer program, To Your Health, on May 5, 2010 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. This program is designed to help teach library patrons to make more informed choices about freely available health information on the Internet. Participants taking this class should have basic mouse skills and an Internet Basics class or previous experience using the Internet. Registration is required and space is limited. Library News - Author Laura Pederson - Apr. 2010

    On Friday, April 8, over 20 members of a local book club gathered at the Grand Island Memorial Library to listen to local author Laura Pederson speak about her novel, Buffalo Gal. The author donated several copies of her novels to the library. Members enjoyed her stories about growing up in Western New York as well as information concerning the writing process. There will be a Spring Session of the Toddler Time Lapsit at the Grand Island Memorial Library featuring stories, songs and fingerplays for children 18 months to 3 years old. Each child must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. Children must be 18 months old by April 28, 2010. The program will be held on Wednesday mornings, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. beginning on April 28, 2010. Used Book Sale At GI Memorial Library – March 2010

   A used book sale will be held on Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10 in the Community Room of the Grand Island Memorial Library, 1715 Bedell Road, Grand Island, NY. This sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Grand Island Library, and will provide you with a great opportunity to spring clean your book shelves and donate some of your books for the sale. Then you can visit the sale and purchase some "new to you" books for your spring and summer reading.
   All of the items have been donated, and the proceeds will be used for books and equipment for the library, and also for the many wonderful children's programs that are held throughout the year.
   A bid table containing special items is included in the sale with bids closing at 12:00 noon. Winning bidders must pick up their items within thirty days.
   The sale starts on Friday, April 9 for Friends of Grand Island Memorial Library, members only from 5 - 7 p.m. Individual memberships are $3 and life memberships are $35, Family memberships are $5, with life memberships $50. All memberships are available at the door. Admission on Friday night from 7 - 9 is $1.00.
   On Saturday the sale runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with free admission. You may fill a bag with books for $2 from 1 - 3 p.m.
   If you need any further information, contact the library , 773-1333.
   There have been book drops on Saturdays in February and March and there is another one scheduled for March 27. If this isn't convenient for you, donations may be dropped off any time during regular library hours. This is a great way to help the library and to re-circulate books you've already read.
    Also, if you'd like to help with the sale or become a member of the Friends, please leave your name and phone number at the main desk of the library, 773-7124.

   Over 120 children and adults attended the Nickel City Reptile program at the Grand Island Memorial Library on Thursday, February 18 presented by Jeff Musial. The program was funded by the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library and featured exotic animals.
