Later he moved to Kenmore N.Y. where he attended Kenmore West High and joined ski, golf, and tennis clubs. He also played trumpet in the band. There he met Gloria Johnson whom he married in 1946. The Bells owned and operated a small dry cleaning business, Corwins Cleaners, for a few years, but when they found no profit in it, Cory joined the railroad . He became a ticket salesman, then clerk and finally towerman. He worked many long, lonely hours in the towers surrounding Buffalo until ‘86, working with giant hand pulled levers that switched tracks for oncoming trains that he could only see as small lights on a giant board above him. With his tiny, perfect penmanship he logged countless hours of trains coming and going from Buffalo freight yards. To get into some of these snow bound areas was a daunting task as some towers were only accessible by foot. Many colleagues were only voices over a two-way radio, whom he probably never met. Cory worked for New York Central, Penn Central and Conrail in his thirty-seven years there.
In the years during this time period, Cory moved his growing family to Grand Island where he had two homes, the second and the family's favorite being 841 Ransom Road. Six acres of paradise with a creek and huge trees to climb. There he could putter around in his garden on his days off and his children could play on the tractor, fish at their little falls, ice skate, camp out and roast hot dogs over an open fire. "With a cistern filled with dead snakes and frogs it was a miracle any of us survived, but somehow we did, despite the many accidents and the nasty drinking water we endured," daughter Kathy said. "Living a country life in the boonies, 800 feet off the road with only seven other houses on the street, could be odd and scary, like the time Dad came home and hid in the attic. He kept making strange noises while we hid beneath the kitchen table, where we had been watching twilight zone. Finally someone crept outside and spotted the car," Kathy said. "Or the time Paula was babysitting in the middle of the night and looked out the window only to see a house going by. Turned out it was new neighbors, moving a gigantic shed to their property via our lawn and driveway. One time little Gary wanted to impress his dad by burning up nasty tomato worms the way dad had carefully showed us…… problem was he didn’t understand about the tiny bit of gas in the coffee can! Instead he put the worms into the gas can and added the lit match and kaboom! No more eyebrows!"
"Adventures, always popping up but made possible because of Dads foresight for a good home. In dark winter somehow Cory and the little sled made the long trek through the deep and drifting snow out to the stranded auto where he had left most of yesterday’s groceries. These are the things we will remember about our dad. He did what he could and provided the only way he knew how and I thank God for him.
Corwin is survived by his children: Paula (Stan) Nakayama of Fairfield, CA; Greg (Lynda) Bell of Everett, Washington; Kathleen (Stephen) Olszewski of Grand Island, New York; and Gary (Lori) Bell of Westminster County. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren: Ryan and Erin Lawson; Grant Votava and Kailea Bell; Jacob, Rachel, Daniel and Grace Olszewski and Whitney and Lindsey Bell. A memorial is planned for the summer. Place of burial will be Dungeness Cemetery. A memorial is planned for Summer 2010. Place of burial will be Dungeness Cemetery.
