Town Board Approves New Panhandling Law - February 2020

The Grand Island Town Board voted Monday, February 3rd, unanimously, to crack down on aggressive solicitation. Problems have been occurring at Top's Plaza and the Grand Island Plaza, where individuals have been aggressively asking for money from patrons, as they are entering and exiting the stores. Other places of business have also been affected include the Moose Lodge on Grand Island Blvd., Walgreen's and Rite Aid drug stores and other stand alone businesses. See Local Law Panhandling On Public Property.
Residents are advised to call the police if they are subjected to aggressive panhandling. Penalties if convicted are not less than a $25 nor more than a $250 fine. A second conviction within 12 months may end up in imprisonment.

Town Board meetings can now be seen on the Grand Ideas for Grand Island Facebook page, thanks to Jenn Pusatier.
The first meeting of 2020 began with proclamations honoring retiring Town Justice Sybil Kennedy and retiring Chief Court Clerk Maria Burns. A co-retirement party is planned for Friday, January 17th at Classics V.
The first meeting of the year deals with reorganization issues. Supervisor John Whitney appointed Councilman Peter Marston as deputy supervisor and Rhonda Diehl as supervisor's secretary. Highway Superintendent Richard Crawford re-appointed Skip Mrkall as deputy highway superintendent.
The Traffic Safety Advisory Board (TSAB) ) sent a letter to the Town Board outlining concerns regarding the South Point project. They believe the traffic study of 2017 is outdated, and should look into expanded peak hours of 6:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Also, the impact of South & North Bridges at peak hours and roads to the I-190 from the Parkway. See letter. The TSAB has a regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, January 14th and representatives of South Point are said to be attending. There is no public comment at this meeting.
The next Town Board meeting will be Tuesday, January 21st due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
