Mission: Service to veterans. Information for various benefits due veterans of all services, national and community affairs
Help: Help in recruiting recently discharged veterans and those veterans who do not belong to at least one veterans organization
Strengths: Largest veterans organization in the world.
Ideas: The many veterans living on Grand Island are a great untapped source of community involvement. They should be encouraged to help the various programs in the town.




Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day - December 2016

American Legion Color Guard.

   The Charles N. DeGlopper VFW Post 9249 hosted a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day ceremony on Wednesday, December 7th outside, at the post flagpole. This was the 75th anniversary of the attack by Japanese fighter planes that killed more than 2,400 Americans. Also in attendance were the American Legion Grand Island Post 1346 and the Air Force Association L.D. Bell-Niagara Frontier Chaper 204, along with many veterans and Island residents. VFW Vice Commander Paul Coughlin welcomed the attendees, VFW Chaplain Mike Cutini gave the invocation and benediction. Supervisor Nathan McMurray spoke to the group. The ceremony was followed by lunch and guest speakers inside the post.

Patriot Day Poppy Drive Volunteers - September 2016


   The annual Poppy Drive needs volunteers to distribute Poppies on Friday the 9th and Saturday the 10th of September. Members are asked to help this fundraiser be a success. If you would like to help for an hour or two it would greatly appreciated. Funds are used for your Veterans and Local Community Charities. Call Joe Synakowski at 773-4180 or John Forrest at 512-0691 for more information. Thank you for helping your Veterans and the Grand Island Community Charities.




American Legion News - August 2016


   The Grand Island American Legion sponsored a new baseball team this summer. The new team made it into the playoffs in July.

   The Grand Island American Legion recently donated $1000 to the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Park expansion. Members of the Legion were photographed with Certified Auto Brokers owners Travis Smith and Chris Taylor. Smith and Taylor ran a promotion in July which donated $100 for every car sold to the expansion project. They wrote a check for $3140!

   Joe Synakowski recently accepted a proclamation from the Town of Grand Island designating August 16th as National Airborne Day. The Parachute Test Platoon was organized in 1940 and went on to become the 82nd Airborne Division. Many Islanders over the years have served in the 82nd Airborne and two, Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper (1944) and Lt. Col. Terrance K. Crowe (2005) were killed in service.




American Legion Baseball - June 2016

   The first game of the Grand Island Post 1346 American Legion Baseball team, comprised mostly of Grand Island High School members was played Monday, June 6th, at Veterans Park versus the Tonawanda Post team. The Grand Island team pulled out a victory in the final inning after trailing Tonawanda 1-0, with a homerun by Jason Kowalski. driving in Shawn Pufpaff on 2nd base after advancing on a sacrifice bunt. Final score 2-1. The team is doing very well with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss. Next home game will be on Monday, June 13 at 6:00 PM at Veterans Park Diamond # 1 versus The Lamm Post. Come out and see the team in action, admission is free, bring a lawn chair. See you at the ball park & bring a friend.

American Legion Baseball - June 2016

   The first home game of the newly formed American Legion Grand Island Post 1346 Baseball Team will be played at Veterans Park on Monday, June 6th, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. We are looking to see all Post 1346 members support our team. All are welcome to cheer. Come and watch good baseball by our Grand Island High School juniors and seniors. Coach Scott Pupaff and assistant coaches Jim Niland and Will Tomkins have the team ready to give a top notch effort. This is not Little League, American Legion League Baseball is country wide and many of its players have made it to the Major Leagues. Your support is needed and admission is FREE. See you at the ballpark. Many thanks to Patrick Soos for his work getting the team organized.




Plant Fundraiser & Baseball News - May 2016

    The Grand Island Post #1346 American Legion wishes to thank all who gave support to the Annual Mother's Day Hanging Basket Fundraiser. This event makes it possible to carry on our many Veterans and Community projects throughout the year. A new addition this year is American Legion Baseball. The team is comprised of players who are Grand Island High School juniors to college freshmen. Games are played under the rules of American Legion Baseball which is a nationwide organization.The Grand Island team will compete with teams from 13 Posts locally, starting the season with an away game at the University of Buffalo diamonds, Wednesday June 1st at 8:30 PM vs the Lamm Post of Cheektowaga. Opening day on Grand Island will be Monday June 6th, at Veterans Park, #1 Diamond, vs Tonawanda Post at 6:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to support our team and we hope to see many fans at the game. Support our Youth.

The winner of the 1/2 Barrel Raffle at the Grand Island Post 1346 Mothers Day Fundraiser is Mrs "Lil" Lonko of Grand Island. She was very happy with the planter donated by the HI-Way Garden Center, Tonawanda Creek Road, Amherst NY. We thank All who supported the Fundraiser. See uou next year.




American Legion Mothers Day Plant Fundraiser - April 2016

    Members of the Grand Island American Legion Post # 1346 will hold their annual Mother's Day Plant Fundraiser on Friday & Saturday, May 6 & 7, 2016, at the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Post VFW 9249, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. The hanging basket flower plants are locally grown and the finest available in the area. The Veteran members conduct this fundraiser to assist local Veterans, Veterans Hospital, scholarships for high school seniors, Neighbors Foundation, and various local community charities. Please SUPPORT your local Veterans and Servicemen and Women. Make Mother happy with a beautiful hanging basket flower. A big THANK YOU from the officers and members of the Grand Island Post #1346 American Legion. Happy Mothers Day!

School Tax Exemption Information - February 2016

    Notice to American Legion Members and Veterans.
    To receive your School Tax Exemption you must be on the exemption list or register by March 1, 2016 .If you are not sure please check with the Town Assessor. This notice is made though the courtesy of the American Legion Grand Island Post 1346.
    March 1, 2016 is the deadline for all Basic STAR, Enhanced/Senior STAR and Veterans property tax exemptions to be added to the assessment roll for School tax year 2016/2017 and Town/County tax year 2017. There will be no courtesy telephone calls made. If you have not already done so, please bring your paperwork to the Assessors office at Town Hall on or before Tuesday, March 1st.2016.

    The Grand Island Post 1346 is asking all Members and Veterans of Grand Island to join us in the coming year to give our help to the Veterans who may need assistance. Many Veterans are not receiving the benefits they have earned while serving their country. Many Veterans are not aware of the organizations that can help them get the aid that is available to them.
    The American Legion, Erie County Veterans Service Agency, Buffalo Vet Center, and the Counselors at Veterans Hospital, are a few Organizations that will help with counseling and applying for the many benefits available. The Officers and Members of Grand Island Post 1346 welcome all Veterans to join our Grand Island Post of The American Legion. The Post meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM at The Loyal Order of The Moose Meeting Room, 2524 Grand Island Boulevard, Grand Island, NY. We are eager to to make you a "Proud Member of the American Legion".
