In a Buffalo News sports article by Ben Tsujimoto, he listed 10 local players, high school or college age that could play for FC Buffalo of the NPSL - National Premier Soccer League. GIHS senior Garrett Robinson was one of the 10. Tsujimoto wrote; "What isn't Garrett Robinson good at? The Vikings star is impressive with the ball on the ground and in the air, is an asset in the midfield or up front, and boasts leadership qualities to boot. Although it's uncertain if he'll continue playing soccer into college, he's proven enough across his high school career to deserve a look from the highest-level team in Buffalo."

A news story on Time Warner Cable News proclaims "Grand Island Town Board Rejects Homeowners From Providing Short Term Rentals". At the last workshop meeting a motion made by Supervisor Nathan McMurray to set a public hearing on the new law did not get seconded. The new local law #7 would have grandfathered the current tourist home operators. The old law #9, which is in effect, gave the operators one year from inception, which was last fall. So, they are all operating illegally. At this point the operators are going before the Zoning Board to get a one year extension, if approved. Just another issue that goes round and round and round....
Update: Zoning Board Meeting Minutes 12/1/16. See which tourist home properties were denied and which were tabled for further review here.

The Share Your Happiness Annual Food Drive is currently underway at all of our Grand Island Schools. The Neighbors Foundation is extremely grateful for your generosity which allows the organization to assist our Grand Island neighbors who are in need this Holiday Season. Please note this is the last week to bring in your donated food items. All donations must be turned in to classroom teachers by Monday, December 12th. See the attached flyer for suggested food items to donate. Thank you and Happy Holidays from the Neighbors Foundation!

Councilman Mike Madigan has again pledged to match up to $1500 for donations to the DeGlopper Memorial Park Expansion. Head to Certified Auto Brokers at 1693 Grand Island Blvd. to make your donation or go to the website.

On Tuesday, December 6th the Erie County Legislature and Visit Buffalo Niagara announced a collaborative effort to finally bring ridesharing to all of Upstate New York. In the 2017 Erie County budget, the Legislature allocated $100,000 to Visit Buffalo Niagara to help in their campaign to urge Albany to act on legislation and legalize ridesharing. This is the first major local financial investment by a governmental body to bring ridesharing to all of New York State. It is a great service, I used it in Florida recently. Hopefully it will come to WNY soon.

Last weekend the team dominated the Grand Prix class at Regates de Valleyfield, Quebec, winning the three day event. This was the fourth time the team won in Valleyfield over the last 6 years, winning in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016. They have won three of five regatta's this season and are looking forward to dominating at the Thunder on the Niagara race on August 6 & 7 at Gratwick Park, North Tonawanda. Island resident Tom Snyder of Snyder Industries is a sponsor of the Steeler and of the Thunder on the Niagara Races.

Here we go again...now it's the West River Bike Path. The latest in contentious topics that will be good for the Town, we're told. Hundreds of people showed up to give their opinions, the majority against the preferred plan of making the West River Parkway a bike path, and moving traffic over to the West River service road. But will that matter? Trapping went down to the minority (3-2) last Monday night, thanks to veteran Councilmen Chris Aronica and Ray Billica and newcomer Mike Madigan. Next on the agenda is Tourist Homes, another subject talked about for the last year, with the majority of Island residents against the concept. The new Town Board members all seem to be in favor of it with "stringent regulations", so there it is, 3-2, grandfathered tourist homes allowed. Now the Bike Path. Let's make Grand Island famous for having a beautiful spot to ride & walk at the expense of the residents who live there. Sure, lets move the traffic close to the houses. Children should play in the back yard anyway. Let's add seven new parking areas for bikers in the median in front of the homes, that's what I would want to add to the view, I so handsomly paid for. Those bike riders that cruise the Island in packs? They won't even use it...they go too fast. You know that commercial where the guy says "you make my head numb"? Town Hall is making my head numb.

Fahim & Seema Mojawalla have transformed what used to be a dreaded experience into a highly anticipated stop. The shipping center is adding the capability of shipping large items, 500 mail boxes with keyless entry and a larger gift shop area, thanks to an addition and remodeling effort by property owner Larry Playfair. The Mojawalla's had an idea for a motivational wall, shown above, painted by local artist Theresa Covatto. Each week Fahim will be posting motivational quotes within the island. Stop by for shipping, a gift or just to say hi and be energized by their positive spirit. Their social media hashtags are #Spaofshipping, #ExudeExcellence and #FahimFix.

Congratulations to GI seniors Austin Blair and Gabby Robinson, named King and Queen at the Winter Dance on Saturday, January 23rd at the high school.

Thanks to Doug Smith, a 49 year resident headed with wife Polly to be near their daughter in Cortland, NY, in the spring. Doug called to say he is clearing out his home and has treasures he just can't toss away, would I take them? Of course I would! Delivered Friday, along with wonderful stories of the past, was a Grand Island Transit bus schedule, a Grand Island Centennial program from 1952, a copy of the last Tonawanda News paper dated January 31, 2015 and a copy of The Boston Herald, announcing the death of President Roosevelt, dated April 13, 1945. I can't wait to see what he comes up with next!!!!

Buffalo News Fall Power 10 High School Sport ranking listed Grand Island boys soccer at #8. "After a 0-1-1 start, the Vikings won 19 in a row to earn the state's top ranking in Class A and reach the state semifinals. Grand Island's thrilling run ended with a 3-2 loss to eventual state champion Amityville of Section XI. Still, a 19-win season equals one heck of a year."

That crazy rescue dog Lollie was finally caught after 40 days on her own. Her mad-cap adventure began at the north end of Grand Island, traveled over most of the rest of the Island, up over the North Bridge, and around the LaSalle area of Niagara Falls.. Talk about nine lives! Lollie finally wandered into a trap set next to Ventry's Pizza on Pierce Avenue in Niagara Falls and was brought back to the shelter where she started, in Nassau, Bahamas.

It was taken at Smitty's Restaurant, located in the spot where the Island Deli now stands. From left in the photo is Don Fancher, Karen Anderson Webb, Ramblin Lou; offstage is Don's sisters, Donna Fancher Carpenter and Hazel Fancher Rowe.

The Buffalo News had a photo montage of 50 - "You know you're from Buffalo if ..." on Monday, January 18, 2016, on their website. #39 was "Seeing the Grand Island bridges approach fills you with a sense of dread". We know different! I believe for most Islanders it is relief, almost home!

Check out a Buffalo News article titled "National Fuel tries to ease Wheatfield residents' concerns" by Thomas J. Prohaska. The first sentence of the article states; "National Fuel representatives tried to convince skeptical Wheatfield residents Wednesday that a proposed natural gas dehydration facility wouldn't poison their families." Interestingly enough it was mentioned further in the article, Ronald C. Kraemer, vice president of National Fuel Gas Supply Corp said "the company was looking for a site in an industrial zone between the junction of the existing Empire Pipeline and the supply line from Pennsylvania. He said the choice boiled down to Wheatfield or Grand Island." Does that mean if Wheatfield gives it the heave-ho, Grand Island is next? Hmmmmmm.

The space will be ready to go in a couple weeks and will be utilized by the Golden Age Center senors and youth during Saturday Recreation session. It could really use some new industrial carpeting, so if you know any carpet fairies, get in touch with Joe!
