Memories of Dorothy Bascomb
by Lenore Tetkowski
Dorothy Bascomb passed away about a month before her 98th birthday on April 28. She seemed to be asleep in her chair that afternoon when her daughter, Betty, realized she had so calmly and quietly passed on. ³I knew it would happen, but it was still a shock,² said Betty. Many of us who knew and loved Dorothy feel the same way.
We had just bought the property on Whitehaven Road when Dorothy crossed the street to welcome us. Soon learned that each family had a two-year-old. That was sixty years ago. So our families were neighbors and close friends as the years brought changes. Nursery school carpools, Little League, barbecues, birthday parties, shared holiday meals joined us closer.
Ours was a dependable deep friendship through power outages and far more serious loss.
At each stage of her life, Dorothy was creative and contributed to the community. After retiring as librarian at the Campus School at Buffalo State College, Dorothy became the first director of the Grand Island Golden Age Center.
About twenty years ago, Betty convinced Dorothy to move in with her family in Dansville. A cozy apartment was made there, and Dorothy joined a creative writing group. Some of her memoirs of her childhood with a medical doctor father who made home visits in a horse and buggy have been published.
Always generous, she continued to create original greeting cards for her many friends, sometimes incorporating tiny dried flowers.
The lilac bush in front of my house is about to bloom again, an annual gift from Dorothy¹s husband, Larry, to my husband a great many years ago.
The Bascomb family plans a graveside memorial service to be held in Salamanca in early June.
