Ever wonder why Grand Island, Nebraska is named so? Just like our "grande isle", French fur traders named an island in the nearby Platte River, 'La Grande Ile' in the later 1700's. The island was incorporated in 1872 by damning the western flow of the river. The river is actually so shallow that it is hard to canoe.

Interestingly, the traffic congestion on the Grand Island Bridges were graded in 1995 on the Comprehensive Master Plan as South Bridge Level of Service (LOS) "E" and the North Bridge LOS "D". Those are described as LOS "D" - Represents high density but stable flow. Speed and freedom to maneuver are severely restricted and the driver and/or pedestrian experiences poor levels of comfort and convenience. LOS "E" - Represents operating conditions at or near the capacity level. All speed limits are reduced to a low but relatively uniform value. Freedom to maneuver in the traffic stream is extremely difficult. Comfort and convenience levels are extremely poor. Level "F" - Used to define forced or breakdown flow. the condition exists wherever the amount of traffic approaching a point exceeds the amount which can traverse the point. I inquired with the Thruway Authority on December 13, 2017 as to what the grade was today. After speaking by phone and through email, I have yet to get a response.

Remember....there is no charge to announce your engagement, wedding, anniversary or birthday, even with a picture! Only at Isledegrande do you get that kind of service.

Update (October 13, 2017): Grand Island wins boys, girls NFL titles
Grand Island won its third straight Niagara Frontier League boys soccer championship with a 6-0 win over North Tonawanda. David Bilek had two goals and two assists while Luke Ailinger had a goal and two assists. Next game is at Masters Field on Wednesday, October 18th.
It took two goals in overtime for the Grand Island girls to capture the league title over Niagara-Wheatfield. Kayla Robinson and Brooke Amato each scored in overtime for the 2-0 Vikings' win.
Girls Soccer: No. 1 large school Grand Island (14-1, 11-0) and No. 4 Niagara Wheatfield (13-1, 11-1) play at Lew-Port at 5 p.m. tonight for the Niagara Frontier League championship in girls soccer. The Vikings scored the first two goals of the game in a 2-1 win at Wheatfield on Sept. 12th. Their lone loss came at Rochester private school Aquinas, 1-0. The Falcons have won seven in a row since losing their only game of the season.
Boys Soccer: The boys soccer title game will be played at 7:30 p.m. at Lew-Port tonight between No. 7 large school Grand Island (9-3-3, 9-1-1) and No. 9 North Tonawanda (10-2-3, 7-2-3). The Vikings won a 3-1 game at NT on Sept. 21.
Football: In Class A North: There's one playoff spot up for grabs. Grand Island (5-1, 4-1) controls its own destiny on Friday Night, playing Williamsville East (4-2, 4-1) at home (7pm). The Vikings can finish first, third or fourth. A Grand Island win gives it the No. 1 seed, Starpoint No. 2, Williamsville East No. 3 and the Sweet Home-Williamsville South winner No. 4. A Grand Island loss would give Starpoint the No. 1 seed and East No. 2. If Sweet Home beats South, Grand Island is No. 3 and Sweet Home No. 4. If South beats Sweet Home, South is No. 3 and Grand Island No. 4. Loser of Sweet Home-South is out of the playoffs.
