   Pickleball Island is hosting a fundraiser for JDRF, an American nonprofit 501 organization that funds type 1 diabetes research and advocates for regulation favorable to medical research. It will be on Saturday, December 29th from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. at 401 Lang Blvd. There is a $20 entrance fee at the door that includes equipment, lessons, open play, skills competition with prizes, give awazys and refreshments.

   The Niagara Region Park Interpretive Program office invites you to "Zing" in New Year's Eve on a snowshoe hike along the majestic Niagara River! It will be on Monday, December 31st from 10:00 a.m. - noon. A great chance to try the lightweight "Atlas" snowshoes or take a scenic power walk if there is no snow.        You have to agree, Scott Kalman & Tom Dworak had to be the best dressed, at a 70's theme Christmas party last weekend. I think they may be best holiday dressed Island wide! If you look closely you can see the suits are patterned with cats dressed in Santa costumes.

       Island native Amanda Mays was recently appointed WNY regional director for Empire State Development. She will also serve as executive director of the WNY Regional Economic Development Council.

       Island Ship Center has extended hours for the holidays. Saturday, December 22nd, they will be open from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

       Grand Island resident Todd Riniolo is a Professor of Psychology at Medaille College. He and a colleague are looking for volunteers for an online experiment involving Netflix. It involves watching a show on Netflix and answering some questions. It will take approximately one hour. See flyer for details.

       Island Ship Center has extended hours for the holidays. Saturdays, December 15th and 22nd, they will be open from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

       The staff of Assemblyman Angelo J. Morinello (R,C,I,Ref-Niagara Falls) will hold mobile office hours on Tuesday, Dec. 18 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Grand Island Town Hall, 2255 Baseline Rd.        The Historical Society Christmas Open House will be on Sunday, December 9th from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at River Lea in Beaver Island State Park. Come and enjoy the decorations and sounds of the season in the historic farmhouse. Later that evening, the Grand Island Community Chorus will present its Christmas/Fall concert, "Here We Come a Caroling", at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 9th, at St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church, 2587 Baseline Road. Both events are free and open to the public.

       The Light Up the Boulevard Electric Light Parade awards go to Step in Time Studio of Dance for best marching group and RE/MAX for best float.

       2018 All-Western New York football first, second, third teams and honorable mentions were announced this week. Grand Island Vikings named to second team offense; OL: Jeremiah Wilkes and Honorable Mention to Cam Sionko, WR: Justin Gorrell, OL: Kenny Yockey.

        The Golden Age Center will be accepting donations of NEW blankets for pediatric patients at Oishei Children's Hospital, at the center, 3278 Whitehaven Road & Town Hall, until February. See Warm Up WNY Blanket Drive.

       Thanks to a Facebook post, this snow shoveling tip could help you avoid having your driveway plowed in. See here. Along with that, Chuck Berlinger reminds us that "parking restrictions are between 2am and 7am. Also, do not put your garbage on the paved surface of the road, it prevents the road from getting plowed correctly and can prevent you from getting your mail delivered if they can't get to your mailbox. Shoveling and snowblowing your snow into the road is illegal and you can be ticketed."

       Family & friends of Teddy Linenfelser said goodbye this morning at a beautiful funeral service at St. Stephens Church. The service was filled with music and singing, which she loved, and a wonderful eulogy by son and daughter-in-law Jim & Laury Linenfelser. Teddy showed me the ropes of the news biz for 11 years at Isledegrande. Although she has been retired since 2012, it seems like yesterday we shared an office, and she shared her vast knowledge of GI history. Rest in peace pretty lady.

        Grand Island sophomore Brooke Eichel went all the way to the diving finals at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships last Friday at Ithaca College. Eichel qualified in the preliminary round in 22nd place with a score of 195.00. In the semifinals, she placed 14th with a score of 305.85, qualifying her for finals, where she placed 20th as the only representative from Section VI.

       The Grand Island Relay For Life sponsored King of the Wing contest was Friday, November 16th at Say Cheese. The Island team came in second to a Niagara County team. Scott Kalman was the winner for GI, eating 31 wings in 10 minutes. Lynn Dingey was the female winner, with 17 wings in that time.

       Mallwitz's Island Lanes is hosting a "Turkeyoke - Annual Pre-Thanksgiving Bash", tonight, Wednesday, November 21st from 8:00 p.m. - midnight.

        This Saturday, November 24th is Shop Small Saturday. Try to schedule a stop at a Grand Island business to keep your money local.

       West Virginia University sophomore and Island native Lindsay Proctor has been named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 GPA or higher and participate in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Lindsay is studying accounting. Congratulations!

        The DeGlopper Memorial Foundation recently sent out a mailing asking for donations for the expansion of the DeGlopper Memorial Park. Even though a $100,000 grant has been secured, $500,000 still needs to be raised. You can donate online at www.DeGlopperMemorial.org. No amount is too small.

       Grand Island boys volleyball won their first ever sectional title on Tuesday, November 6th against Hamburg 25-17, 25-19 and 30-28. GI was the number 2 seed and Hamburg seeded 8. They then played Eden for the Division II title Wednesday, and lost in straight sets, 25-18, 25-10, 25-23 at Lackawanna High School. Congratulations guys on your first sectional title.

        Supervisor Nate McMurray announced at a news conference on Wednesday, November 7th, "this is far from over", "18,000 votes have not been counted", across the region. Chris Collins got 49.4 percent of votes, while McMurray received 48.4 percent, trailing by 2800 votes. The Erie County Board of Elections will start opening absentee ballots on November 20th. You can expect officials to certify the results near the start of December.

       Three students from the GIHS class of 2019 painted the rock at Grand Island High School early this week in honor of Julie Roth Neville. Sadly, Julie died on Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. The students are Melina Aceti, Bridget Neeson & McKenna Prochaska. A Go Fund Me page for the Neville family can be found here.

        The Grand Island Vikings won the Class A-2 title two weeks ago to get into the playoffs, and last weekend beat Niagara Wheatfield 14-0 to end up undefeated in the league. They will be playing #7 ranked South Park at Gene Masters Field on Friday night, October 19th at 7:00 p.m. in the first game of the the Section VI Football Playoffs.

        FYI if you are interested in Document Destruction: Empower, a Niagara County-based not-for-profit service provider, is offering document shredding services at its Empties for Empower location, 4701 Military Road (near Route 31 intersection). The service is provided by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, who are paid for their work. Individuals, small businesses and nonprofit organizations can take their documents to Empower for shredding. The hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. weekdays.        Congratulations to Grand Island Fire Company firefighter Allison Demartin on becoming an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician. She recently started the 13-month paramedic course at Erie Community College.

        The 15th annual SMArt Walk for a Cure, which benefits research into Spinal Muscular Atrophy, the leading genetic cause of death for infants, takes place Saturday in Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island. Registration is $20 and begins at 8:30 a.m. The walk, for one or three miles, starts at 10:00 a.m. Hot dogs, snacks and water will be provided afterward.        A story from WKBW TV on July 19th noted the cashless tolls has had no effect on congestion at the South Grand Island Bridge. The Thruway Authority monitors traffic patterns daily and said the time it takes to get on the Island has not gone down. It has remained the same as before, generally five minutes from 290 merge.

        Grand Island cardiologist Dr. Fred Albrecht will be performing with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra on Friday, July 13th at Kleinhans Music Hall. Albrecht plays the bassoon and started the Doctors of the World program several years ago with the BPO.        Remember this weekend- June 23-24 - is Free #Fishing Weekend in New York State. No fishing license is required so check out any of the state's 7,500 lakes and ponds and 50,000 miles of rivers and streams. In addition, September 22, 2018 and November 11, 2018 have also been newly designated as Free Fishing Days. During these days, anyone can fish the fresh waters of NY and no license is required!

        The Town of Grand Island is looking for bids for trail construction at the Scenic Woods/Bicentennial Park, located off Ransom Road, between Sturbridge, east to East River Road. Bids will be excepted between June 29th and July 25th. Another project that is seeking bids is for garbage/recycle collection and disposal. Many complaints have been made about recent service.

       The Grand Island Fathers Day Lawn Mower Races & Classic Car Show has been postponed until September 15, 2018 at Veterans Park. The races are dedicated to Mary Dunbar-Daluisio, who lost her battle with cancer last fall. Mary is shown above at last year's races with two of her nurses.

        Grand Island electrician Don Benoit is opening a restaurant next to the Erie Canal in the City of Tonawanda, hopefully by the end of June. Prescott's Provisions will be located at 40 E.        Grand Island attorney Angela J. Marinucci is challenging incumbent Michael P. Kearns for the job of Erie County Clerk. Marinucci is a graduate of Niagara-Wheatfield, Hobart and William Smith Colleges and American University.

        The Relay For Life Dan McBride Memorial Hockey Game is scheduled for Sunday, May 6th at 4:00 p.m. at the Harborcenter. Many Island skaters will participate, along with former Sabre Andrew Peters. The cost is $10 at the door and there will be a basket raffle.

        Sadly, the Father's Day Lawnmower Race has been cancelled due to the closing of West River Parkway and Veterans Park being unavailable. The committee is trying to find a date to reschedule over the summer at Veterans Park.

        Does anyone remember WKBW Radio's War of the Worlds? It aired on Halloween night in 1968, and Grand Island was the supposed landing site. A new documentary by Bob Koshinski, followed by a panel discussion will take place at the North Park Theatre on October 30th.

       Grand Island High School senior Kyle Huttenmaier competed with a partner, Tonawanda High School student Alex Prims in the Automotive Diagnostics competition at the Niagara Frontier Automobile Dealers Association's 2018 Ron Smith Memorial Auto Tech Competition. The team won the top spot in the competition, earning them a three-day, all-expense paid trip to New York City to compete in the National Automotive Technology Competition. In addition, they received toolboxes full of tools and equipment and $1,000 scholarships to further their automotive education.

        Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library will be sponsoring a used book sale at the Library on April 13th and 14th . On Friday, the sale will be from 5-7 pm for Friends members only. Memberships are available at the door. Saturday will include "Fill a bag" for $5 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., followed by $2 a bag from 1- 3 p.m. Donations of used books will be gratefully accepted at the library.

        A Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser sponsored by Sidway faculty and staff will take place at Riverstone Grill on Monday, April 16th from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Proceeds go to Relay For Life. Eat in or take out, cash only. Tickets at the door are $10 for adults and $9 children & seniors.

        The Relay For Life Dan McBride Memorial Hockey Game is scheduled for Sunday, May 6th at 4:00 p.m. at the Harborcenter. Many Island skaters will participate, along with former Sabre Andrew Peters. The cost is $10 at the door and there will be a basket raffle.

       The Bedell House annex fire was 30 years ago yesterday, March 28th, 1988. I took the above picture in the summer of 1987 when our family held a "clan gathering". Sure do miss that place!

        Thanks to Highway Superintendent Dick Crawford and his team of Skip Mrkall, Kevin Koch, Mike Carlson, Bill Stanley and Gary Lazik. These fine gentlemen took the bull by the horns this morning, and within an hour of the request, moved the "old" Town Hall cupola from a dirt berm at Kelly's Country Store, to a spot in the parking lot. This year is the 50th anniversary of the opening of the new Town Hall. The Grand Island Historic Preservation Advisory Board is working to get the cupola "display worthy" for the celebration.

        The 14th annual Scotty Bowman Showcase is a three-game all-star event at the KeyBank Center on Thursday, March 22nd. Grand Island players include junior Dylan Russo playing in the Tim Horton Memorial Cup game and seniors Parker Morrow and Jason Lupp playing in the Rick Martin Memorial Cup. Coach Don Pray is a coach for the Buffalo Seniors in the Scotty Bowman Cup. Congratulations!

        A fundraiser is planned for Dana Papaj on Friday, March 23, 2018 at the Radisson Hotel, 100 Whitehaven Road, from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. There will be a basket raffle and 50/50. Tickets are $20 per person. See flyer for details.

       Fun story from Fahim and Seema at Island Ship Center. A Grand Island resident and her family recently moved to Iowa where her husband's job relocated. The weather cooperated and four gallon tubs arrived on the Iowa doorstep, after an overnight flight from Buffalo.

       UB women's basketball team is (20-4, 11-2 Mid-American Conference) and beat Central Michigan (20-4, 12-1 MAC) its first loss of the MAC season, last night. GI's Cassie Oursler had 24 points and 13 rebounds in the contest and received a honorary basketball before the game for breaking the 1000-point mark at a game on February 3rd.

       Posted on Facebook: The next 4-6 weeks is mating season for coyotes. Please do not let your dogs out alone. The coyote gets your dog to chase him and then somewhere in the distance the pack waits for your dog. Then the outcome is tragic. Just be aware it can happen to your beloved pet. (Coyote breeding typically peaks in late February and early March, the gestation period averages 58 to 63 days. Male coyotes can become more aggressive during this time of year, the long and short of it all is that coyotes always pose a risk to your dog (and other small pets). That risk increases during mating season.)

        Keep your cars locked in your driveway. There were reported break-ins in the Sandy Beach area this week and last week Hazelwood Lane.

       There are still openings in the Grand Island Historical Society's Community Education class, 'Explore Grand Island History - Part II'. There wil be four classes held at the high school that will feature interesting topics, maps, and artifacts. The last class will be at the society's museum, River Lea, in Beaver Island State Park.        There is another Islander in need. Howie Benns was a fearless hydroplane racer back in the day. He was one of the best hydroplane racers around, racing "Sudden Seven" and "Miss Budweiser", among others. Since June of 2017 he has been in and out of the hospital seven times and could use some help with his medical bills. See gofundme page for details.

        Saw on Facebook, Niagara Speedway Go-Cart Track at Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls, Ontario is scheduled to open this Spring. Take a look, so fun!

        High school graduation rates continued to climb in districts around New York State last year. The four-year graduation rate as of August for Grand Island was 96%. East Aurora had the only 100% in the area.

       Saturday night is Prime Rib night at the Town Cafe, 2352 Grand Island Blvd.! A dozen family members from near and far enjoyed the creations of Chef Perry Spencer this past week. Prime Rib with garlicky shrimp scampi and Prime Rib Marsala were fan favorites. There are numerous other items to choose from AND Grand Island's only soup and salad bar is included with every entree.         The Golden Age Center's Flap Jack Fundraiser on Saturday, February 24th has been cancelled and will be rescheduled.

       Island resident Terri Filips Vaughan is an associate professor at Niagara University. Since September 2017, Terri has been working on a new musical, created and starring Eddie Money, "Two Tickets to Paradise: The Musical".        College Power 10, dated January 29th, Jack Good ranks the top 10 college performers in the area. 2. Cassie Oursler: The Grand Island product led the University at Buffalo women's basketball team (16-3, 7-1 MAC) in points (25) and rebounds (13, a career best) in a 97-92 overtime victory against Eastern Michigan. She hit a layup and a pair of free throws down the stretch in extra time to help UB to its fifth straight victory. Point guard Stephanie Reid also had a highlight moment, as she hit a free throw for her 1,000th career point.

        The Grand Island High School Viking wrestling team has earned their first Niagara Frontier League championship in school history this season. The Vikings are undefeated in the league, with the only loss of the season to Lancaster.

       I received an email from a Mr. Maas from the Netherlands, looking for a Irvin Lynn, that lived at 2907 Fix Road in 1949. Mr. Maas bought an electric Gibson guitar in Europe, that at one time was owned by Mr. Lynn. He found a letter hidden inside the guitar with his name, address and date of purchase. Mr. Lynn no longer lives at the Fix Road address, if anyone knows of a relative or contact, please send an email to jodi@giecom.net.
