Grand Island History: What with the upcoming election....Interesting quote attributed to Grover Cleveland while campaigning for Mayor of Buffalo in 1881. "It is a good thing for the people now and then to rise up and let the office holders know that they are responsible to the masses." After Cleveland won, his idea was, office holders are the "trustee and agents" of their fellow-citizens, "holding their funds in sacred trust, to be expended for their benefit."
Cleveland loved to spend time hunting and fishing on Grand Island at his Uncle Lewis F. Allen's farm, Allenton Farms. A group of like-minded peers called the "Jolly Reefers", incorporated themselves as the Beaver Island Club in 1852, Cleveland was its president throughout its existance. See story written by Teddy Linenfelser in 2004.

Lower Niagara River action has been great for walleye. Parker Cinelli of Grand Island caught and released an 11-1/2 pound fish recently on a spinner and a worm.        A few weeks ago we had a bat in a living room window, stuck between the screen and glass. My husband rescued it and off it went, or so we thought. Then the rabies alert happened. Lo and behold, on Monday, three more were spotted in the attic. After some googling, I bought moth balls, which bats are supposed to hate (along with cinnamon and eucalyptus). They were placed in the attic vent, and we have not yet seen them flying in and out.

After the recent deaths of our two Beagles, my husband and I adopted two dogs through Sadie's Safe Harbor Canine Rescue. It is a great organization out of Orchard Park, that goes where pets need to be rescued, and bring them back to WNY.
